Tren a las Nubes, Argentina
The “Train to the Clouds” has been considered as one of South America's great railway journeys since its construction was completed in 1932. It offers a 16-hour, 270-mile round trip that departs from the Argentinian city of Salta passing through tobacco fields, lowland ranches, 29 bridges and 21 tunnels before climbing to more than 4,200m at La Polvorilla viaduct. The Tren a las Nubes is world’s third highest railway.
The railway now serves mainly in the tourism industry though it was initially constructed for economic purposes
White Pass and Yukon Route, Canada and US
This 110-mile route connects the Alaska port of Skagway with Whitehorse, the capital of the Canadian territory of Yukon. The narrow gauge railroad features steep gradients, dozens of bridges and a number of cliff-hanging turns. It passes through glaciers, mountains and waterfalls.
The railroad was completed in 1900
Georgetown Loop Railroad, US
Operating from April until December, the 4.5-mile Georgetown Loop train transports passengers from Georgetown, Colorado, to the neighbouring town of Silver Plume, passing through spectacular mountainous terrain and particularly experiencing over 600 ft in elevation.
The Georgetown Loop has become a popular tourist attraction for more than a century
The Death Railway, Thailand
The construction of a 258-mile railway between Bangkok and Myanmar had killed more than 90,000 labourers and 16,000 Allied prisoners of wars. A train on the surviving section of the route takes tourists to the northwest of the Thai capital, passing over some weak wooden bridges and sheer cliffs.

Kurunda Scenic Railway, Australia
The one-hour and 45-minute journey from Cairns to the town of Kurunda cuts a path through the Barron Gorge National Park, passes over waterfalls and tropical forests as well as 15 tunnels.
The railway was completed in 1891
Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, South Africa
Connecting the towns of George and Knysna in South Africa's Western Cape, the 42-mile route and two-hour route hugs the country's Garden Route coastline before crosses the lagoon at Knysna.

Mountain railways of India
The country has three railways, which were constructed during the British Raj and considered engineering marvels, includes the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Kalka-Shimla Railway, and the Kangra Valley Railway. Each railway runs through foothills of the Himalayas, and a beautiful terrain.
